Today's Tides

Current Tide At Stony Point

The tide is currently rising

Current Tide Explanation

The tide is rising across Western Port as incoming water increases depth through its channels, flats and shoreline areas.

Increasing depth may allow fish to move from channels onto flooded edges and flats to feed.

Strong tidal currents can occur in Western Port, particularly around channels and constricted passages. Check local conditions before fishing or boating.

Pressure

Barometric pressure

Pressure is most useful for fishing when it shows movement. A stable, rising, or falling trend can add context to the rest of today’s fishing forecast.

Interpretation

Pressure changes tend to matter more than the absolute value, especially when conditions are shifting.

Pressure is only one signal. Wind, tide, solunar timing, water movement, and local structure still matter.

Reading the wind

Wind direction and strength can affect comfort, casting, and exposure around this location.

Wind gusts can be stronger than the average wind speed, so it's worth checking the gust forecast if you're planning to fish from an exposed location or need to know about potential changes in conditions.

Even modest wind can affect comfort and casting, especially where the water is exposed.

The marker shows the current wind direction, while the daily outlook below shows whether conditions are likely to build or ease over the coming days.

Marine interpretation

Wave: caution Water: cold

Current marine conditions suggest a fairly manageable sea state.

Marine caution

Higher waves suggest a conservative approach, especially in exposed areas. Forecast wave heights are averages rather than peak conditions. Individual waves may exceed the forecast height at times. Wind and local chop can quickly affect comfort and control. Wave period around 11.95 s can influence how conditions feel on the water. Conditions in open water can change quickly, so keep checking throughout the session.

Water temperature

Water temperature is around 12.8 C, making immersion a more significant factor to plan for. Cool or cold water can affect grip, coordination, and swimming ability. Hypothermia is a real risk, particularly if you become immersed in the water. Wind and rough water can increase the impact of an accidental immersion.

Check local marine warnings, ramps, vessel limits and current conditions before heading out.

What are today's best fishing times at Stony Point?

Today's sunrise is 6:56 am and sunset is 5:48 pm. As a general guide, the hour before and after sunrise and sunset are often among the most productive fishing periods. No high tide or solunar period falls within the sunrise or sunset fishing periods today, so the other listed bite windows may provide better timing guidance. The sea-surface temperature is 12.8°C, some species may be less active in cooler water.

Being a land-based location using berley is extremely important in order to bring the fish towards pier and you.

Summer Fishing

King George Whiting, Snapper and Squid can be targeted at the pier during summer. Activity is strongest for these species during the warmer part of the year. Actual catches will vary according to temperature trends, localised weather and tides.

Winter Fishing

Squid are the species to focus on because Winter is when the water drops below 15c and this pier is no different. Fish can be slower to bite with reduced activity levels. As always what you catch varies with the prevalent temperature trends, localised weather and of course tides.

Spring Fishing

Spring sees the water temperature begin to rise with King George Whiting, Silver Trevally and Snapper becoming more active. Later in spring summer species such as King George Whiting, Snapper and Squid begin to move into the area and can become more common at the pier.

Stony Point Fishing

Stony Point Pier is a land-based Western Port fishing location on the western side of the Mornington Peninsula, reached from the end of Stony Point Road. It fishes into deep water and a major tidal channel, with nearby parking, trailer spaces, public toilets and a boat ramp facility. One side of the pier services the Stony Point ferry to French Island and Phillip Island and is restricted, while the right-hand side is the fishing side.

The major factor at Stony Point is tidal flow. Western Port currents can run hard around the pier and main channel, so the hour either side of high tide or slack water can make bait and lure control much easier. The surrounding ground includes rocky beds, mud flats, eel grass, heavier weed, sandy ledges and the pier pylons. Depth increases gradually from the start of the pier before becoming more useful near the platform and towards the north-west facing edge and ferry channel.

Fishing here is usually better with a target and position in mind. Squid are worth working around the shallow reef, weed and sand, especially when jigs can be kept close to the weed without fouling. Whiting tactics are more about finding sand holes beside weed and using just enough sinker to hold bottom. For larger channel fish, long casts from the north-eastern corner towards the main channel and its ledges are the practical approach. Berley can help, but current direction matters.

Heavier gear is useful because of the current and pier height. Surf rods around 10 to 13 feet, 2 to 8 oz sinkers, 40 to 60 lb leader and a large extendable net or gaff are practical when fishing the channel for larger fish. Lighter paternoster-style presentations with small hooks suit whiting and trevally around sand, weed edges and pylons.

Can Getfished tell if fish are biting at Stony Point, today?

No. Because a forecast cannot truthfully guarantee whether fish are biting at a specific spot right now. Getfished shows the current fishing conditions instead: tide movement, solunar timing, weather, wind, pressure, marine conditions and fishing report derived species history.

Use this information to make informed decisions about where to fish, and to compare conditions across nearby locations. We hope you enjoy using Getfished to find your next great fishing spot!
