Ovens River Fishing Guide

A surprising amount of fishing occurs around the Wangarratta and Ovens River area. With Murray Cod and European Carp reports the most common.

The river is all to often overlooked for fishing, standing in the shadow of the Murray, but is well worth dropping a line if you can.

The Ovens River is a long freshwater system running from the Victorian Alps through Bright, Myrtleford and Wangaratta, with access ranging from town reserves to remote bends reached by highway turn-offs and dry-weather tracks.

For lower river access, head north of Wangaratta along the Murray Valley Highway or Wangaratta-Yarrawonga Road.

The upper reaches are reached from the Great Alpine Highway and side roads near Myrtleford, Germantown, Smoko and Harrietville. Most locations are accessible by 2WD in good conditions. But several parking areas, tracks and ramps are dry-weather only unless using a 4WD.

Bank access varies sharply, from flat town banks and sandy low-water beaches to steep river edges with limited room to fish.

The river changes character along its length, which matters more than treating it as one uniform fishing spot. Upper sections around Bright and above have clearer, flowing alpine water and are more suited to trout-style water.

The lower reaches near Myrtleford and Wangaratta include deeper, slower stretches, farmland edges, pine plantation country and structure suited to larger native freshwater fish.

River height affects usable water at several sites, including exposed sand at low levels and harder access on steep banks. Seasonal closures are important for cod and trout cod, so current Victorian rules should be checked before fishing.

Structure is a major part of fishing the Ovens.

Logs, submerged trees, undercut banks, deeper holes and rock ledges are worth checking before settling in one place, especially in the lower reaches.

Some sites have good tree cover and informal tracks leading to different bends, but Frosts Track is part of a larger track network where navigation can become confusing. Parola’s Bend has steep banks but useful water access, while Peechelba Road has very steep banks and only a small practical fishing area.

Bundalong Caravan Park has a small jetty and concrete ramp, though the ramp and parking are best treated as dry-weather options.

Boat and Kayak Access

Boat and kayak access is possible in parts of the lower Ovens, but ramp conditions are not consistent.

Parola’s Bend site 2 has a poor dirt ramp suited only to 4WD use in dry weather.

Tackle Options

Light spin gear suits the clearer trout and [redfin](/fishing-reports/redfin/ water, while heavier gear is useful where timber, deeper holes and larger cod are the focus. Keep tackle choices tied to the stretch being fished rather than carrying a broad kit for the whole river.
