Reading the wind

Wind direction and strength can affect comfort, casting, and exposure around this location.

Wind gusts can be stronger than the average wind speed, so it's worth checking the gust forecast if you're planning to fish from an exposed location or need to know about potential changes in conditions.

Even modest wind can affect comfort and casting, especially where the water is exposed.

The marker shows the current wind direction, while the daily outlook below shows whether conditions are likely to build or ease over the coming days.

Pressure

Barometric pressure

Pressure is most useful when it shows movement. A stable, rising, or falling trend can add context to the rest of today’s fishing forecast.

Interpretation

Pressure changes tend to matter more than the absolute value, especially when conditions are shifting.

Pressure is only one signal. Wind, tide, solunar timing, water movement, and local structure still matter.

Recent readings build the pressure trend used for interpretation.

Mornington Peninsula Fishing

Mornington Peninsula covers a broad stretch of Victorian marine fishing water between Port Phillip Bay, Western Port and the ocean beaches, with both land-based and boat options. It is about 1.5 hours south of Melbourne, making it practical for day trips as well as longer sessions. Shore access is centred on well-known piers and beaches, including Mornington Pier, [Rye Pier’(/vic/rye-pier/), Flinders Pier/, Gunnamatta, Sorrento Ocean Beach and Sorrento. Anglers wanting deeper water or Bass Strait access can use fishing charters operating from Mornington, Sorrento and the wider Peninsula, with some trips set up for bay fishing and others for sharks, snapper, whiting or seasonal offshore work.

Tide timing is a major factor across the Peninsula. The most useful window is around the tide change, especially 1.5 to 2 hours before and after it, when bait movement and current changes can improve activity. Mornington Pier offers deeper water near the end, reaching about 8 metres, while the reef to the left gives another structure option. Rye Pier is strongly tied to night squid fishing, with pier lights drawing baitfish, and Flinders Pier is another squid-focused location with adjacent flathead and whiting ground. The ocean beaches around Gunnamatta and Sorrento suit surf casting when conditions are workable.

Berley trails are worth using where conditions allow, particularly around piers and bay sessions. Fresh squid, garfish and pilchards are supported bait options for this area, but location choice matters more than carrying a long bait list: fish the deeper end or nearby reef at Mornington, work lit water around Rye at night, and shift to the surf beaches when targeting open-water beach conditions. A Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence is required for marine fishing unless an exemption applies.

## Bay Fish N Trips:

Departs from the Mornington harbour for bay charters.Sorrento Fishing Charters: Specializes in seasonal snapper, kingfish, and kids’ trips.Pro Red Fishing Charters: Customizes trips for sharks, snapper, and whiting out of Sorrento and Mornington. I have personally been on a charter with this company and am happy recommend them.

Always remember that when fishing on a charter the weather conditions play a significant role in terms of what you catch and the comfort of your charter.
