Corio Bay is a great spot to launch your boat or fish from the shore. If you’re starting, try easy-to-reach places like Cunningham Pier, Eastern Beach, or the fishing platforms at St Helens. These areas have good facilities and are close to parking. When you arrive, pick a spot with enough space to cast safely, set up your gear away from busy paths, and check for local safety signs. Beginner-Friendly Corio Bay Tackle

Simple rigs like a running sinker or a basic paternoster rig are good for beginners. To set up a running sinker rig, thread a sinker onto your main line, then tie a swivel to the end. Attach a short leader with a hook to the other side of the swivel. For a basic paternoster rig, tie two dropper loops in your main line, add hooks to the loops, and attach a sinker to the end of the line. Start with fresh bait from local tackle shops.

To catch Snapper, use a medium rod around 7 to 8 feet long, a 3000 to 4000-size spinning reel, and 10 to 15 lb monofilament or braid line.

For Calamari, use a light spinning rod about 7 feet long, a 2000- to 2500-size reel, and 6- to 8-lb line. This setup is good for casting small squid jigs.

To catch Gummy Sharks, use a heavier rod between 8 and 10 feet, a 4000- to 5000-size reel, and 15 to 20 lb line.

Around the bay, you might catch Snapper, Calamari, or even Gummy Sharks. Snapper are most active from October to April, especially in spring and early summer. Use pilchards or fresh squid as bait, and try fishing early in the morning or late in the afternoon. To prepare pilchards, cut them into halves or thirds and thread the hook through the tough backbone to keep the bait secure. For fresh squid, slice a strip and thread it onto the hook two or three times to keep it firm during casting. These simple bait-preparation steps make it easier for beginners to get started at the water. Calamari are usually caught from September to December and again in autumn. You’ll have the best luck with small squid jigs in clear or natural colours near weed beds and piers, especially early in the morning or at dusk.

Gummy Sharks bite best in the warmer months, from November to April. Fresh fish fillets or squid strips on heavier tackle work well, especially at night along sandy bottoms. If you have a boat, you can also try more fishing spots in Port Phillip Bay.

Access Restrictions

Some areas of Corio Bay are off-limits to fishing. These include spots near the main shipping channel, the stretch leading into Geelong port, the Inner Harbour around the grain pier, and private marinas like Royal Geelong Yacht Club and Limeburners Point Marina.

There are also restricted industrial zones near fuel berths and refinery piers. These places are usually marked with clear signs or barriers, such as ‘No Fishing’ signs, fences, or painted lines. Easy Access

Many popular spots are open and easy to get to, like Cunningham Pier, Eastern Beach, St Helens fishing platforms, Rippleside Beach, and Limeburners Point. Public piers, walking paths, and beaches are usually open to anglers, making it easy to find a spot for everyone.

Legal Requirements

You need a Victorian recreational fishing license for most fishing in Corio Bay, unless you qualify for an exemption. Exemptions include children under 18, Victorian Seniors Card holders, certain pensioners, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You can buy a licence online from the Victorian Fisheries Authority website or in person at most local tackle shops and some Australia Post outlets.

Minimum Fish Sizes and Bag Limits

Bag and size limits apply to popular species. For example, Snapper have a daily bag limit of 10, with only 3 fish over 40 cm per person, and a minimum legal size of 28 cm. Calamari have a combined daily bag limit of 10 per person and a minimum hood length of 23 cm. Gummy Sharks are limited to 2 per person per day with a minimum size of 45 cm. St Helens Boat Ramp has plenty of parking, barbecue facilities, accessible toilets, and picnic tables. Grammar School Lagoon Ramp is known for easy access, calm launching, and parking. Many ramps and popular fishing spots have accessible features such as level paths and ramps, making it easier for families and anglers with mobility needs.

Family Friendly

Many places, like Cunningham Pier and Eastern Beach, have public picnic areas, shaded seating, and toilets. Some ramps have lighting for early morning or evening launches, and most have parking for trailers.

If you need equipment, you can rent rods, reels, or safety gear from local shops.
