Native Freshwater Species

The variety of native species in Australia’s freshwater differs, but a number of them are found in streams, rivers and lakes in many of the states. Among the common native freshwater species are Murray Cod, which is mainly located in the Murray-Darling river system in New South Wales and Victoria; Golden Perch (also known as Yellowbelly), which is present throughout the Murray and Darling rivers and their tributaries; Silver Perch, which also favours the Murray-Darling Basin; and Australian Bass, which occurs in eastern flowing rivers from southern Queensland to Victoria. Since these species offer good fishing opportunities, it is useful to know their preferred habitats if one is to plan a successful fishing trip.

Introduced Freshwater Species

Species which have been introduced are regarded as pests, for example Carp and Redfin; but in some states introduced species such as Brown and Rainbow Trout are kept and protected. In Victoria and Tasmania, Atlantic Salmon (Chinook) are available with managed populations in some freshwater lakes.
