Region: Melbourne, Port Phillip Bay
Fish: Black Bream, Flathead, Mulloway

Werribee River Entrance, located in Werribee South, offers a pier on the estuary, a boat ramp and beach fishing.

Bream is the target most often sought by shore-based anglers on the pier. Flathead from the beach - and the pier - and whiting being the other species of interest.

Heading out of the mouth, using the boat ramp, into Port Phillip Bay gives access to deeper water with the flathead, pinkie snapper and adult snapper. Naturally, other great bay species like flathead are there too.

The location is great for small and larger vessels. The mouth is always open and has a clearly marked channel for boaties.

The Werribee River Entrance pier is nice for families, though it can get pretty busy, so start early.

Fishing the pier can be a challenge in the early part of the season. From September through to early December it can be a bit weedy. The river also discolours after heavy rains, which can send the Bream off the bite.

While flathead is caught in the estuary off the pier they’re more often targeted off the beach.

At the time of writing, boaties are calling on assistance to have the boat ramp repaired.

Technically there are six boat ramps at Werribee South.  There’s also a carpark dedicated to vehicles with boat trailers, as well as a toilet block.

Look, as much as I historically lover Werribee South for pier fishing – the fact is the state of the boat ramps is a disgrace.  That’s a state government issue.

But the state of the toilet block, I think, comes back to the local council.  Whoever is responsible it’s often in a disgusting state in the last few years.  I understand some people abuse public facilities.  But that’s no excuse for neglect.

Hopefully, this will be corrected, as the local press are running feature stories on the boat ramp neglect as recently as September 2018.

From the beach, it’s possible to cast out into the channel for both flathead and bream.

While most people tend to target bream on the pier and flathead from the beach, the fact is both species are caught from both locations.
