Melbourne, the second largest city in Australia, is located in Victoria on Port Phillip Bay. As the city is in a temperate climate most recreational fishing tends to occur during the spring, summer and autumn months.
Most people generally think of the Melbourne and Port Phillip region in terms of summer snapper and flathead fishing. However, there’s a huge variety of fish species including sharks, mulloway, kingfish, mullet, garfish and more.
The fact is it’s possible to fish year round and some excellent fishing can be had in the colder months targeting Australian salmon, tailor and squid.
There are ample facilities for both shore-based and boat fishing on the bay. While the Yarra River and Maribyrnong River in particular offers estuary species like Bream to freshwater fish such as Brown trout, English Perch (Redfin), yellowbelly and even a few Murray Cod.
