Gummy Shark

Gummy Shark Fishing Reports

Gummy shark fishing reports are particularly common from Western Port Bay. However, they do come in from all over coastal Victoria, including Port Phillip Bay.

Gummy Sharks (of the same genus as the so-called “Smooth Hound” – Mustelus mustelus – famous among the United Kingdom’s beach fishing fraternity) are the shark most often used in “Flake” that fish and chips sell in Victoria.

Scientific name: Mustelus antarcticus

Gummy Shark Fishing Reports

In 2022 so far most gummy shark reports have come from:

Mallacoota, Offshore Barwon Heads, Offshore Barwon Heads,Vic, Elizabeth Island,Vic, Lysaughts,Vic, Top End Western Port,Vic, Hastings,Vic, Mericks,Vic, Lang Lang,Vic, Lang Lang, Off Cowes, Offshore Westernport, Lakes Entrance Surf Beaches, Marlo, Lakes Entrance , Western Entrance, Port Albert, Loch Sport Surf Beach, Lakes Entrance Six Mile Reef, Black Rock, Corinella, Top End Western Port, Torquay Surf Beach.

As an important side note – when catching gummy sharks to bring home it is important they are bled as soon as possible. Usually a long, deep incision with a filleting knife behind the head. Failing to do this will make the flesh extremely disappointing – with a strong ammonia taste.

Gummy Shark Suggested Tackle

So far in 2022 effective baits, according to our collated Gummy Shark fishing reports, have been:

Australian Salmon Fillets, Wrasse, Grass Whiting, Squid, Bluebait, Snook Fillet, Slimy Mackeral.

As far as rigs are concerned I prefer a break-off rig. Comprising of one or two 6/0 hook octopus (or circle) hooks and at least a 6oz rocket or bomb sinker – if fishing an area (like Western Port Bay) with strong tidal pull. The rig line strength of 60lbs.

On a boat a good strong rod with plenty of flex is ideal. From the beach, I prefer a beach or surf rod – at least 10 to 12 feet. The longer shore-based rig ensures you can get your bait out past the shallows. As a rule of thumb, a rod rated at 15 to 24kg should be right.

Gummy Shark Fishing Reports

According to the Victorian Fisheries Department, Gummy Sharks may not be filleted in Victorian waters.

The minimum size is 45cm partial length (see the image with markers on a gummy shark – credit Victorian Fisheries Department.)
